Artist's Note:

Spoiler

I started with this idea: a rectangular signature with an orle of leaves, diagonally oriented and wrapping around the background, with the largest leaves in the lower right, and shrinking as they passed around the upper left, to give the impression that they were further away.  This avenue of maples seemed like an ideal background.  I found a number of realistic leaf clipart pages, and spent most of my time rotating, flipping, and scaling the leaves (only one of them is recoloured; I was annoyed by the lack of red oak leaves, so I made one—though technically all of the oak leaves pictured are from white oaks!).  There are three layers of leaves; one for the large foreground ones, one for some that peek out from behind the background, and some just behind the foreground ones to fill in some gaps and keep the overall shape consistent.  I can recognize a number of maple leaves, some oaks, aspens, and some that look like ash or hickory, plus a couple of sycamores (planetrees).  Not sure about the oval ones; they might be dogwood.  The font is Snell Roundhand; my signature is in Benguiat Gothic Oblique.  Made with Gimp on a Mac.
