CHANGES IN THE COUNCIL

July has been a month full of important news for the clan, mostly due to the council elections that were held on the 23rd. We've seen a significant change to the council's structure, with two members stepping down, and three new council members appointed. Doc, Mooku and Dragon were called to the Jedi Academy's stairs, in order to kneel and receive their new ranks and the responsibilities that come with them. Doc and Mooku both made names for themselves in a very short time after joining our clan, thanks to their tremendous efforts as ambassadors and admins, by being active, and by being a joyful presence on the server.

Meanwhile, Dragon was chosen due to his long loyalty and experience, as he had been a council member in the past, and also because of to his numerous achievements in various JAWA Clubs. Unfortunately, SeTh and Aya Solari left the council due to real life commitments. Aya Solari was appointed a council member in July 2016, and was honoured last fall because of her outgoing personality and hard work on the council. SeTh was only promoted in March, and even though his first council run was short, his input and personality will still be missed. The JAWA Post congratulates Doc, Mooku, and Dragon, knowing that they will do their best in order to keep our community active and vibrant!

HY PRO GLO APPOINTED AMBASSADORS CAPTAIN

As Doc was appointed to the council, a vacancy was left among the ambassadors, which has been filled be Hy Pro Glo, thanks to the qualities he has demonstrated as a member of that club. Hy Pro Glo joined the clan in December 2016, and joined the ambassadors shortly after, quickly becoming known for his reliability and trustworthiness. Due to his efforts, the club managers decided that he had earned the honour of captain, and so the (JAWA) Post congratulates Hy Pro Glo on this important achievement. May it be the first of a long series!

JK:JA ANNIVERSARY TOURNAMENT DATE ANNOUNCED

August 19th has been announced as the date on which the second annual Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy Anniversary Tournament will take place. Originally devised by Link in 2016, this tournament celebrates the ongoing commitment of our community, which continues to thrive after more than a decade! Entrants may include both clan members and solo players. After choosing which saber they will use throughout the tournament, the players will participate in a single-elimination bracket, with the outcome of each match being determined by the best of three out of five duels, overseen by a referee. The winners will be announced on the JAWA Forum. It is still possible to sign up for the tournament, and if any readers wishes to do so, please visit the JAWA forums in order to do so. Best of luck to all of the participants!

THREE DEPARTURES

Balancing real-life commitments and activity can be tricky, and from time to time members have to leave the clan to focus on something else. In July and the early days of August, Elfenlied and Pada decided to leave the clan to pursue other interests. Pada joined the clan in April, and we had the pleasure of getting to know him during his short membership, which ended on the 2nd August. Elfenlied began his journey in August 2015, and during his membership, he joined the JAWA Knights, and reached the #1 spot in the Power 10. On August 10, Gareki also decided that it was time for him to go, due to pressing matters in real life. Gareki had been part of our family since May, 2016, and was a friendly presence in the clan and a member of JAWA Arts. Each of these members will be missed, and the Post hopes that they will rejoin our community one day.

 Wolfy's Forest
Wolfy's Forest.png

Wolfy: Hello everyone, and welcome back to my forest! This time around, I'm sitting with Natsumi. Hello Natsumi, how are you?

Natsumi: I am doing well, how are you!

Wolfy: I'm fine too, thanks! Would you please introduce yourself to the viewers (name/location, unless you don't want to share)?

Natsumi: My name is Natsumi, I live in the U.S. I love playing on the server and hugging people!

Wolfy: Great! You've been with us since last March as a member of our community. How would you describe your experience in the clan so far?

Natsumi: So far it has been really awesome. I love the clan and the people in it! Everyone is really nice, and I think of JAWA as more like a family. I started playing the game in February, and joined the clan in March. I since then joined the Ambassadors and the Knights clubs. There's always something to do, and the people are wonderful.

Wolfy: Aye, and you're also the recipient of a Participation Award! Do you have further objectives in the clan?

Natsumi: I don't think I have specific objectives besides trying to be as helpful as I can! I was really surprised and happy when I got that award, I didn't expect it. I would like to come up with a new kind of event some time, but I haven't really decided on what it would be yet. I guess one objective would be posting the same picture of Jacobie every day for ever and ever! LOL!

Wolfy: That is a great objective! You've made quite a reputation for yourself as a cheerful hugger on the server. Is there a motivation behind that amhug spree?

Natsumi: Well I love people, and I like to try to spread positivity. I think it was Bunny and Jajo who taught me the amhug bind when I was newer, and I've been amhugging people since! It's not just like a greeting, but it's also for some people kind of turned into a game of tag.

Wolfy: It is a nice initiative indeed! Outside of Jedi Academy, what would you find yourself doing? Do you play other games, or have any hobby you want to share with us?

Natsumi: I do like drawing, and playing my guitar. I don't think I'm that awesome at them yet, but it's a lot of fun.

Wolfy: Very well! It is now time for the world-renowned quiz! I will ask five questions, and if you get three or more correct answers, you will win the Golden Acorn of Knowledge! Are you ready?

Natsumi: I think so!

Wolfy: Which Pokémon did Bloop use as his in-game skin?

   A) Bidoof
   B) Miltank
   C) Pikachu
   D) Wailord

Natsumi: Oh I'm not really familiar with that person. But there is a Pikachu in the skinpack, so I am going to say C, Pikachu?!

Wolfy: Correct! That said, I would pay good money to see a Bidoof skin on the server! Next question: what is the correct name of the (JAWA) League event?

   A) Watch Out for that Sniper!
   B) Mind the Hidden Shooter!
   C) Be Careful of the Elite Commando!
   D) Don't be Disturbed by Disruptors!

Natsumi: I've been to I think two Leagues, and I remember it as A. Watch out for That Sniper!

Wolfy: Third question: what is the name of the ongoing tournament in (JAWA)?

   A) The Elite 10
   B) The Power 10
   C) The Super 10
   D) The Perfect 10

Natsumi: If it's that thing that was on the top of the page sometimes, I think it's B, The Power 10.

Wolfy: Correct again! You've secured the Acorn! Let's try and go for a perfect score now. Next question: how many people have received the most prestigious Clan Enrichment Award?

   A) 1
   B) 3
   C) 9
   D) 27

Natsumi: Hmm, I'm really not sure! If it's the most prestigious, maybe not many . . . is it B, 3?

Wolfy: It is! Last question: posting a certain number of times on the forums can earn you an award. But how many do you need to post to earn it?

   A) 1,000
   B) 5,000
   C) 10,000
   D) 1,000,000

Natsumi: Hmm, I don't think I've seen the award. But I haven't seen anyone with a million posts. Is it C, 10,000?

Wolfy: Nope, it was B, 5,000! But worry not, you scored 4/5, still enough to win the beautiful Golden Acorn of Knowledge! Here it is!

Golden Acorn.png

Natsumi: Yay! Thank you!

Wolfy: Thanks for answering my questions, Natsumi! Would you like to say anything else?

Natsumi: Yeah I want to say thank you to all of JAWA, and the people who work really hard to make it the really awesome place that it is! I love you all so much, and hope JAWA is around for a REALLY long time! *amhugs*

Wolfy: And we'll conclude the interview on these beautiful words! Thank you for reading it, and I hope to see you next time!

 JAWARS

JAWARS Title.png

The story so far: Dak ven Tinker, a young Jawa, and his friends, the Rodian smuggler "Spiny Dan" Odresi and Jedi Knight Kiam Dorven, have finally reunited with Rylla Greymoon, rightful heir to the Greymoon spice trading fortune. On the remote agricultural world of Orissa, they found themselves in the strange position of helping to put down a mutiny by an ambitious lieutenant in the forces of the Imperial Remnant, backed by the same wealthy merchant who originally kidnapped Rylla, and who planned to sell her back to her murderous uncle. Now our heroes face some difficult choices!

EPISODE XXVII: TESTING THE WATERS

In the crew compartment of the Jezreel, Rylla Greymoon, flanked by Dak and Kiam Dorven, faced off against Binaton and two of his men. Although Fattavan's majordomo had shown interest in Rylla's proposal, striking a bargain wasn't a foregone conclusion.

Rylla explained her plan to sell the ship's valuable cargo on Hosnia Prime. "You can have half your fee immediately, and half when we take back the Greymoon Estate," she offered.

One of Binaton's men grumbled about not receiving payment up front for what was essentially mercenary service. Binaton raised a hand, a signal for the man to be silent. "I told you," Rylla said, "we need to sell the cargo in order to raise the funds. You'll get paid," she added forcefully. She hoped she didn't have to add, or you can stay a prisoner on this Star Destroyer until your employer bails you out. Such a threat would probably be counter-productive.

"That's reasonable," said Binaton. "I accept your terms, but it'll have to be thirty thousand dataries in the first payment, and another thirty when the job is done."

Dak started to argue, but a glance from the Jedi made him hesitate and keep his thoughts to himself. Thirty thousand credits was an enormous sum of money, enough to buy a freighter like this several times over. And it was almost double what Rylla had offered. He was equally stunned when, after staring her adversary in the eye for what seemed like a long time, Rylla said, "agreed."

"Once we leave Hosnia, stop at Taanab, and we'll pick up a dozen men and their armaments," said Binaton. Looking at Dak, the man added, "don't worry. We're professionals. You and your crew are safe."

Somehow, Dak still didn't feel reassured. But Kiam Dorven placed a hand on the Jawa's shoulder, encouragingly. Right, thought Dak, optimistically, just try double-crossing a Jedi!

Dak and Rylla returned to the cockpit, where Danoweevak was ready to depart. "Everything arranged?" he asked.

"We made a deal. Sixty thousand credits, and we'll pick up his men after we sell the kalmahz."

The Rodian smuggler whistled in astonishment. It'd take him almost ten years to earn that much. But he didn't argue. He knew better than Dak that the spice they carried was worth at least four times the amount Rylla had agreed to pay.

Dak operated the radio. "Fearless, this is the Jezreel requesting permission to undock."

"Jezreel, you are cleared to release moorings," came the reply. Danoweevak released the docking clamps, and the little saucer-shaped freighter drifted away from the massive star destroyer on maneuvering thrusters.

"Course for Hosnia Prime laid in," said the Rodian pilot. "Hyperdrive coördinates set. Engaging hyperdrive." The starfield visible beyond the cockpit canopy elongated, as points of light became bright, blurred streaks, and with a thunderous roar from the engines the freighter leapt into hyperspace, bound for the new capital of the Galactic Republic.

•     •     •

The Hosnian system was filled with more starships of more types than Rylla or her companions had ever seen, many of them dwarfing the spice freighter as the Jezreel threaded a path between them, aiming in the direction of Hosnia Prime. Countless projects seemed to be under construction in orbital space; shipyards, docking facilities, satellite networks, communications relays, and many that were too distant, or too strange, to be readily identified. Individual ships and small convoys ferried workers and freight from one destination to another, as great lumbering generator ships supplied energy for various construction efforts.

Through the canopy, Dak peered at the daytime-nighttime terminator as the Hosnian landmasses slipped through the late evening hours. Approaching the shadowy line between day and night, vast arrays of lights laid out in geometric shapes began to appear. These, he realized, were cities taking form. It was a sight like none he had ever imagined before leaving his homeworld.

The Jawa scanned the local holonet for information about the main supply yards. Such information was freely distributed for the benefit of the thousands of vendors, merchants, and industrial shippers delivering supplies to the colossal project; it was much more efficient than trying to relay the information individually to each ship as it arrived in the system and sought to unload its cargo. It took a while to find the right one; apparently there were two hundred and thirty-eight warehouse categories in the surface listing for the main capital! But only one was relevant; the Quartermaster Main Food Supply Headquarters. If anyone could use — or afford — the quantity of kalmahz in the Jezreel's cargo hold, it would be the Quartermaster Chief of Ground Operations.

For efficiency, even docking operations at the warehouse facility were largely automated. Dak selected a berth of the appropriate size, as near to the main requisitioning office as he could find. Fortunately, there seemed to be a lot of small berths scattered here and there between the larger bays. Better still, since this was a vast enterprise, and supplies of all kinds were being delivered from every corner of the Republic, there were no docking fees!

The Jezreel descended through reddening evening skies, the clouds reflecting the scarlet light of the setting sun and bathing the Quartermaster Yards in brilliant fiery hues, as the ship approached a warehouse facility large enough to house thousands of times the little freighter's cargo capacity. Slowing to maneuvering speed, the ship passed through the vast open wall on the south end of the warehouse, and glided gently past transports of all shapes and configurations, descending toward cargo pad 284-B. Danoweevak set the ship gently down, turning the freighter clockwise ninety degrees to bring the cargo hatch closer to the lading equipment.

As the engines spooled down, Danoweevak lowered the gangway, and the crew gratefully stretched their legs. "Now," Rylla said, yawning slightly after hours of relative inactivity on board, "we need to meet with one of the Quartermaster Supply Chiefs." Obviously they couldn't all go together; that would simply draw unwanted attention.

Dak volunteered to accompany Rylla as she tried to negotiate a price for the kalmahz. Danoweevak bowed out of the running. He didn't need to explain that a Rodian smuggler was likely to make the supply chief draw all the wrong — or perhaps all the right — conclusions. The cargo was technically stolen, after all, even if Rylla was the rightful owner.

The little Jawa was disappointed when Rylla chose Binaton and Kiam Dorven to go with her, but he understood. He'd have looked as out-of-place as "Spiny Dan", and while he sighed, he couldn't argue with the decision. The two companions remained with the ship, together with Binaton's henchmen. Maybe it would be a good chance to get to know them . . . was that even a good idea? he wondered.

•     •     •

A Jedi Knight certainly lent a sense of legitimacy to any transaction, but the Quartermaster Supply Chief wasn't so easily satisfied. "You have no bill of lading, no certificate of ownership," the man said, shaking his head. "I simply don't see how we can accept this cargo."

Rylla tried to argue. "I've already explained who I am, and my identirecord checks out. The cargo is clearly marked 'Greymoon'. Besides, you yourself said that kalmahz would be in high demand with a workforce this size, and you don't have any supplies on hand."

The chief seemed almost persuaded, but just wouldn't let go of the bureaucratic guidelines. "All true," he said. "But I still can't accept this shipment." Rylla looked to her companions, but realized there was little they could add to what she'd already said. As if reading her mind, the chief continued. "Look, I believe you, but everything has to be approved under the supply charter, and I don't have any grounds to make an exception in this case."

Kiam Dorven looked earnestly at the chief. "You'll find an exception," he said calmly. "You need this cargo too badly not to find a way."

"You know," said the chief, "we could really use the spice. I'm sure I can find some way to make an exception."

"No, you won't," said a gruff voice from a nearby corridor. A small, blue figure hovered into view and confronted the Jedi. He wore the same tan uniform as the supply chief, but suspended in mid-air, spindly legs dangling beneath him as a set of angular wings vibrating too quickly to be seen clearly held him in the air. The Toydarian scowled at the newcomers and his co-worker. "We can't accept this cargo," he said, glancing at a datapad. You should know better than to take advantage of us underpaid dockworkers, Mister Jedi, he said, scolding them and at the same time exaggerating his own position slightly.

   "But..." Rylla started to say.

"But nothing," interrupted the Toydarian. "No bill of lading, no certificate of ownership, no sale. I don't care who you are."

The Quartermaster Supply Chief looked regretfully at his partner, but didn't object.

"Alright, alright," said the Toydarian, as he turned back to Rylla. "Look, we can't accept this cargo. Even if we believe you. But some of the dockyards in orbit aren't quite so demanding when it comes to supply regulations. We work for the New Republic. They're private concerns."

Rylla wasn't quite ready to thank the Toydarian after he'd scuttled the deal. But Binaton proved again that he had a cool head. "Thank you for your advice," he said, as the three left the office.

"I'd try the Hyborian Construction Yards," called the Toydarian after them. Binaton nodded, but Rylla was still angry. Begging to sell her own property to government officials. More than ever, she was determined to make her uncle pay for his treachery.

THE PODFATHER

By: IronSkull86

There once was a JAWA named Pod,
His face was as dark as the void.
He tortured and tormented poor travelers,
But sometimes he'd settle for a droid.

Pod was a silent creature,
He terrified anyone who came near.
If he looked at you, you'd be toast
Wherever he went people would run in fear.

If you ever see Pod coming,
If you look at him the wrong way.
Pod will surely see you,
And you will be on your own on that day.

 Chemist's Laboratory
Chemist's Laboratory 500px.png

Greetings everyone, and welcome back to my lab! Winter is over already, but back when I first sat down to try out this game, the weather was just right - very cold, stormy and, on top of that, the central heating got cut off! So I wrapped myself in blankets, prepared some steaming hot tea and quickly immersed myself in surviving the harsh weather conditions in this game called...

FROSTPUNK

The year is 1886. The United Kingdom is frozen: A blizzard has devastated the fields, leaving the whole country starving. The hunger and the cold resulted in civil unrest, but the real danger is still ahead — a terrible ice storm of unprecedented scales came from the South. To save its people from certain death, the government has decided to send expeditions North, as far as Arctic, where lay rich deposits of coal and metal. They planned to build huge steam generators there, large enough to heat entire settlements. In the lands of permafrost, with scarce resources and no help from outside, these generators were to become the last hope of humanity... Unfortunately, the project wasn't finished in time, and now it's your task to utilize one of the generators, build a settlement and provide a group of refugees with everything necessary to survive!

Lab 1 March 2019.jpg
Your city will never get bigger than a large village... But it is up to you to make it fully autonomous nonetheless.

Desperate times

We're put in charge of a newly created settlement, its inhabitants united by one cause — survival. And by no means it will be an easy task, as initially there aren't even basic shelters to house your people, and your starting stashes of coal, wood, steel and food are going to be depleted soon, so you will have to find ways to replenish them as soon as possible.

The temperature doesn't drop below -20 oC (-4 oF) during the first few days. Your seasoned settlers won't even care to wear hats in such hot weather! It's also best to only fuel the generator at night initially, in order to save coal. Until the real cold strikes, your settlement has some much needed time to get on its feet. Send a few people to hunt at night, assign your engineers to research new technologies, while your workers should begin to gather valuable resources. Always leave a few spare hands to help out at the medical post — there always is a significant risk of catching cold!

The workforce is one of the most precious resources and it is super-important to assign the jobs wisely: Some of the buildings will only do with "true" workers, infirmaries and factories require expert engineers, while mines always tend to be understaffed, so anyone will do! To ensure maximum effectiveness, you will probably even have to reassign workers a few times a day, so micromanagement skills are important.

Lab 2 March 2019.jpg
It took 4 days for the workers to finish the road towards the storage buildings. Maybe I should have built them a bit closer to the generator?

Probably the biggest problem you will always face is keeping your citizens warm, otherwise they get sick, frostbitten or even die. Sure, it's always warm near the generator, but there is limited space near it (naturally), and some buildings, like aforementioned mines, can only be built at the edges of your pit, so it's a pain in the neck to keep them heated.

The game is relatively easy during the first 15 days. If spent wisely, you can even outrun the always dropping temperatures (which will decrease to as low as -60 oC or -76 oF by day 15!) and have some spare resources when the real challenge begins. Researching helps a lot, and the game offers a lot of different paths to ensure you are stocked with resources, but plan and prioritize wisely!

...call for desperate measures

Unfortunately, the grim atmosphere of this game isn't based entirely on fighting the ever increasing cold. Just like in This War of Mine, the previous project of this developer, your choices in resolving the civil conflicts play a great role. If your citizens start getting cold or hungry, they will come to you and ask to resolve the situation, so you will have to either ignore their requests or promise to solve the problem... quickly. Whether you force your people to work additional hours or find another solution doesn't matter. If you break your promise, people will get angry and might even present you with an ultimatum: Find a solution in 3 days. If you fail again, you will be banished from the city, and that's game over. If you want to avoid this, always remember to keep an eye on two parameters, which represent the settlers' spirits: hope and discontent. Having low hope threatens your position as the Captain, and so does having high discontent. By solving small conflicts and passing laws you affect these parameters, often simultaneously, so being able to keep the balance is important.

After a certain point you will also have to choose a new path, that will unlock new laws for you to pass: Faith and Order. Both branches have their minor and major laws, major laws being able to preserve your position and the ultimate law eliminating one of the parameters entirely (meaning that you will not have to care about it anymore), but watch out: the bigger the instant impact of the law, the bigger the consequences are later in the game.

Lab 3 March 2019.jpg
Desperature measures, indeed.

Winterborn

A large portion of Frostpunk's charm is based on the atmosphere of hopelessness and desperate fight. The artists did a great job of showing how hard surviving on a tiny piece of land around the generator can be. When I first sent my people to gather some wood, I spent around 10 minutes admiring their tiny figures making their way through the snowbanks, stiff from the cold. The heat of the generator melts the snow around it, revealing dull, grayish earth beneath, while giant, clumsy automatons step right over the buildings and recharge from the generator, just like you would imagine steam-powered robots to. You can even feel the temperature dropping as your citizens do: during especially cold weather the screen literally "freezes" at the edges.

Lab 4 March 2019.jpg
-150 oC, or -238 oF is the coldest it can get during the Great Storm. Even my maxed out generator, working on overdrive wasn't able to save me from this cold. Brace yourselves!

The developers from 11bit Studios did a great job of adding a rich atmosphere and difficulties of moral choices to a city-building game. Frostpunk is beautiful, fresh and interesting. I recommend it to anyone who'd like to spend a few nights surviving the harsh weather conditions together with the settlers, help them regain hope and live through the winter!

Go ahead, cast your vote and leave some constructive criticism! There's a new topic every week, and you never know what might be coming up!
